Sovereignty outdueled Journalism down the stretch on a muddy track to capture the 151st Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Sovereignty, ridden by Junio Alvarado, and Journalism, with Umberto Rispoli up, were neck and neck in the final furlong before Sovereignty pull ahead and grabbed the win for trainer Bill Mott.

Journalism closed as the 7-2 wagering favorite in the field of 19 3-year-olds.

Rain fell on and off throughout the day in the first Derby run on a sloppy track since 2019, when Country House won via disqualification.

Grande, trained by Todd Pletcher, and the Bob Baffert-trained Rodriguez were each scratched in the days leading up to the Derby due to a bruised foot.

I've kind of lost touch with thoroughbred racing in recent years but I still try to watch the big races. Looks like it was a fairly clean race. Muddy, though.

Yeah I dont watch a lot of horse racing either but I keep track of the big 3 lol

It was a good race on an absolute mess of a track.

And if it had been a dozen meters longer, the favorite would have finished third.

My question always is, other than the dedicated horse crowd, how many of the people there could name all three of the races in the Triple Crown?
