there are some people who are staff who are just 'in it for the status' and not the work, most of the time. Perhaps they consider to have a 'sense of power/responsibility' over the community. They also may like the colored username. I don't like people who are like this and I feel they should be staff because they want to help out the forum, and care about it.

Have you ever came across members like this?

Bunches.

Which is why I decline the offer to become any sort of staff every time it is made, which also includes positions at our church and various civic groups.

Usually with the quote from General William T Sherman:

"If nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve."

Well yeah that sums up most that just in it for the power

Eh, I've came across many people who only seem to want to have power and not really care for the forum once they have the power they desired. These people are pretty easy to spot though.

Yes I agree! I've came across many that wanted just the power and the status, but never wanted to do what they where nominated/elected to do! Most just want the authority to tell users what not to do and what not to say on the forums just so they make themselves feel more important that the other members.

When I used to run many forums, a lot of the times I'd ask my friends to help out and they would only join if they could "be an admin/mod, too". It seems asking a stranger can result in the same issue.

Well, either that or just use the powers without knowing the real issue.

I have never noticed actually because when I see some labels, then it gives feeling that they are working and we cannot know if they are not working.
