Do you think it makes a forum look bad to see staff with bad spelling or grammar?

If there's like a valid reason for it, fair enough. It depends on the personality of the staff member, but usually I think that if you are going to be a staff member you need to set an example, and make the cut yourself.

It's tough - as there may be a reason for the poor grammar. I think it's worth looking into each case individually.

Oddly enough, I find that most of the people with the grammar and spelling issues actually speak English as a first language. lol

I never really understood that one tbh. XD

The second in command of my forum has terrible grammar, but I've seen him use good grammar, lol.

He says bad grammar is FUN

i actually turned on a feature allowing only me to remove the edit stamp from the bottom of my post on my board.

I always use it

sometimes it is bad, and staff are supposed to have good grammar. i myself am guilty of things like: teh and meh, so i can't say anything too bad.

To be honest if a staff member has poor spelling/grammar I generally won't hire them... I think it looks unprofessional and dislike bad spelling.

Well if you learn English as a second language chances are you learnt it formally...just generalising here. And no teacher teaches their students chat speak.

I did have some assignment that had some questions, about some ads, like What does LOL mean?

I think it is more important on a 'service' related forum...support forums, technical forums, advertising forums. Rather than on a general chat forum.

On a chat forum, most people are there to chill and relax. But a service type forum, a lot of people expect a higher level of expertise. (at least my experience anyway)

Yes & No. I believe you should put forth an effort on a support board or another official board discussion forum, but as long as the person knows what they're talking about and can provide quality support, even with grammar errors, I think that it is acceptable. I will not call the grammar police, but it helps if you do not use slang/put forth a little effort. Most of the time, I may come across a grammar error or fragment, but as long as it is contributing to the discussion and is meaningful, then I support them for getting involved and attempting to do something that others may never could even imagine trying to do.

(Second language perhaps)

Well luckily some browsers like firefox can catch spelling errors.. BUT they cannot catch bad grammar or missing words.. Missing words is what I'm really bad about. I always skip over words when Im posting. I say them in my head but doesnt come out when Im typing. lol

I usually read my posts for errors before or after I post them though. I try to do it more BEFORE I hit submit.

Just would like to say that staff are just regular members like the rest of the community. The only difference is that members who become staff are volunteering their time for a thankless job. I don't think just because you are a staff member puts you above any other regular member. With that said, sure staff make spelling/grammar errors just like the rest of the members do. As long as I can understand the posted thread/reply, I just post back. In a perfect world, this wouldn't happen but I don't happen to live in a perfect world.

I'm dyslexic. But I try my best to be correct. I know alot of people have commented in the past (without actually knowing it is a problem for me, Some people can be quite horrible actually) and some won't even join if they see admins make spelling mistakes on the forum :/

It looks a little bad, IMO, but I don't mind too much. I mean, we're all human. Some people are just like that. Plus, it's that part of it - the human part - that makes it seem more fine.

That's sad and just plain mean. There are members with disabilities and who the heck is anyone to judge them.

Just want to say, Fullmoon, I've never noticed anything wrong with your posts.

Only if they have a good enough excuse. Heck I was once a member of a forum that had a Argentine as a mod and typed stuff in perfect English (Although he denies it

If they make simple mistakes, then I won't really care because everyone makes mistakes every once in awhile. If it's every single post, then I probably won't hire them. As long as people can understand their posts, I don't see the harm in hiring them.
