The Association of Teachers and Lecturers, which represents 160,000 school and college staff, may walk out for the first time in more than 30 years in protest over the Governmentââ¬â¢s austerity measures.
The proposed action ââ¬â likely to take place later this year ââ¬â could cause schools to send classes home or close altogether.
Union leaders said they were outraged by Government demands for a 3.4 per cent increase in pension contributions by 2014.
They said changes to the teachersââ¬â¢ pension scheme were introduced four years ago to ensure it remained ââ¬Åaffordable and sustainableââ¬Â and the latest changes represented an unnecessary burden on staff.
Any proposed walk-out could eventually be joined by other teaching unions which have also condemned reforms to public sector pensions.
