What do you think deserves a permanent / forever / can never come back / ban?

What deserves a couple days / week / month type ban?

Permanent bans only go to ongoing spammers, flamers etc.

Temporary bans go to members who have just had a big flame war, but it isnt constant.

I usually only do perma bans. I don't do temp. If you screw up 3 times you're gone. Immediate bans is racism, spamming, etc.

The same thing can be interpreted, or even be worse in some situations than some other. I don't have a set guide for what does and does not deserve a ban. As for permanent bans, it is so easy to get a new IP and account, I don't see the point. Ban as you need it. Banning is always the last step for me, though. I don't do it, unless necessary, and I try to be reasonable.

Reminds me of a certain member over at FA in its glory days - you could put their posts on moderation queue (but approving them's a task). I only give Permanent Bans to repeat offendors, but not spambots. I just delete their accounts.

I dislike to use neither.

I haven't banned, infracted or even warned a member in about 6 months.

While I don't ban that often. I go on this system: 1st offense=warning (unless of course it's really bad which hasn't happened yet), 2nd offense or so=temp ban, then if they come back and continue then it's permanent. And then if they come back with proxies or something of the kind, server ban (can't even look at my site or any site on my domain).

After you've used up 3 strikes on my forum, or did something that violates the TOS, or that I have to spend my time having to clean up.

In other words, Spammers, be they bots or not, Trolls, and those whom have used 3 strikes. I don't believe in temp bans because if they didn't straighten up during the 3 chances they were given, then they probably won't straighten up at all.

I'd rather put my focus on the members who know how to behave, and conduct themselves with maturity on the forum, and can chill with other members of the community, rather than some putz who just doesn't get it, and is trying to piss me off by disrupting the community.

So, if they don't want to follow the rules, that is fine, they don't have to, but by the same token, they don't have to be there, and so, they won't be.

I go by this...

Here at ShadowSpace we have a set of banning rules and we thought we should make them public.

You can be issued warnings for an offense of the forum rules. You will be warned at the discretion of a moderator or administrator.

1 warning: Nothing

2 warnings: Nothing

3 warnings: 1 week IP ban.

4 warnings: 2 week IP ban

5 warnings: 3 week IP ban

6 warnings: Complete IP ban.

7 warnings: I will hunt you down with an axe, and smash your computer to bits, burn the bits, and take the ashes and dump them into a river!

This is how my forum is moderated:

3 warnings = a one day ban.

4 warnings = a three day ban.

5 warnings = a permanent ban.

To me a ban in of itself is permanent.

A temp ban is just imo another way of saying suspension.

Moderation should always be done on a case by case basis. I never cared much for the no thinking required moderation that some do because it doesn't leave room for you to make a judgment and can lead to making some really bad decisions.

I have never permanently banned anyone. It is unnecessary for all but the most persistant offenders.
