This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Alan talks about the dark web and how it can be used for worthwhile purposes.

Alan Pearce is a journalist, broadcaster and author specialising in the Deep Web. He teaches cyber-security and counter-surveillance to journalists and is author of Deep Web for Journalists: Comms, Counter-Surveillance, Search and others.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

ah, the dark web...

there's a few dark web browsers and such that can be used as an entrance...

be wary however...

You can use a regular browser, if you know the addresses.

BUT!

Some of those sites defend themselves aggressively and with extremely nasty software unless you know the right passwords and what not.

Also, some of them are invitation only. Even if you know the address but don't have the right token on your machine, you'll be done before you know it.

yes, use a regular browser you wont be as protected...

use dark web browsers and proxies if you want to be more anonymous...

Usually those browsers and proxies are super slow.

Given the nature of the topics of discussion and the merchandise offered, now in 'bitcoin' to ensure certain parties who may disapprove stay out of the transactions....

"Slow browsers" aren't usually a serious inconvenience.

And for those who don't know what is available on the 'dark web', it is more than 'kiddie porn'.

Much more:

Yes, real live human sex slaves are up for bid from various sources, including some from outside of Southeast Asia, parts of the former USSR, and Central America, although those are still the predominate locations for it, delivery available, operators are standing by....

As are fully automatic weapons, and the occasional 'soldier of fortune' to use if for you, 'recreational chemicals' in multi-kilo lots, vehicles, including aircraft, without those pesky papers you have to take by a state office to register, and so on.

Essentially, anything NOT allowed on services such as Ebay and Amazon can be found Down There.

And, if for some reason you don't see what you're looking for, there are several sites that specialize in tracking down items for discerning customers who have bitcoins to spend. Including, as rumor has it, a thriving "to order" market for high end artworks NOT up for auction at Christie's but that are instead owned by, say, a museum that won't sell.

You can also use proxies and web browsers for normal everyday things like browsing forums and whatnot anonymously. Not everyone wants the admins and moderators of a forum to see their IP address and I can respect that.

Actually Tor has been compromised by the NSA. Most proxy providers keep a log of your IP and where you go and what you do. If you do something illegal on a proxy server and they get the feds breathing down their neck, they will turn over your original IP address because they are not going to prison for you. I use proxies all of the time, but only to protect myself from people who look up my IP or want to attempt hacking my computer.

I know its not 100% effective, but I only use proxies to keep from hackers mainly. Not for illegal use. You can be anonymous, but if you're wanting to do some dirty shit. You need to make your own proxy server and place it some where hard to trace. A lot of hackers make their own software and thats why some of them don't get caught. But all these main Proxy services that are advertising. You're not 100% anonymous. Trust me.

VPN providers can log web activity over their network, but it is more common to see VPN providers log users’ IP addresses, logon/off times and bandwidth usage. This logging activity allows providers to identify individuals abusing the service for fraud and spam, but in doing so they acquire information that can be used to identify individual users.

You can be absolutely sure if a VPN provider is pressured to cooperate with authorities and they have any information to identify you as the suspect you will be up shit creek and you will be there without a paddle. No one is going to go to jail for you.

Check out this article.

Is your VPN Legit or Shit?

I was reading through all of this and trying to figure out how I really do feel about such things. I don't care about those who want to be anonymous. Honestly it doesn't really affect me and, I'm not sure if that is bad or good though. We will always have those who feel the need to go above and beyond the law. Those who feel that they can only do the best from behind their computers. Just how it is. I'm not against or for this either. I take a rather neutral stand regarding this if you haven't noticed lol.

i don't use proxies as they are so slow and annoying...

if someone wants to come and find me then i'll be glad to help them out... ;)
