Someone has to be paying for the domain renewal every year and for the hosting to keep the site online. Wonder why they keep it online if they aren't maintaining it.
Yup, That's happened too often IMO. I've made it a mission to check the last login and/or post date of several staff members before deciding to either register to the forum, or if profiles are private until logged in, I'll sign up and if the staff appear to be MIA, i simpyl won't return to said forum and make sure I won't receive any emails from said forum.
Thats a good way to gauge if a forum is dead or not.
SMF is better than MyBB yeah I said that! :p MyBB is meh, I mean it's better than phpBB but not as good as SMF. Anyways back on topic! (Shocking I know!) xD If I see that the staff hasn't logged into their accounts in a long time, I just won't bother to join.
Why is it better?

I feel that the ACP is easier to navigate than MyBB's. Plus I prefer the default SMF theme to MyBB's, it looks more professional.

Good question?

I found a couple of old web pages with some info on the site though if anybody wants to read them?

Quite the history that place has. Thanks for sharing.

Hmm, me thinks default themes shouldn't be a factor on deciding on whether a software is "better" than another software. Those are meant to be changed anyway, at least most people who are serious about their forum will not use the software's default theme.

I forgot what their ACP's look like. Maybe I'll make some test boards and check them out. :|

I've been on some forums where the owner is around technically but doesn't post much, some to the point where people wondered if he was a bot. But in those cases, I wasn't really worried about the forum shutting down or anything since they're "around" just not active. Not sure I've had many where they're completely missing.

I've seen that as well. Uninvolved forum owners are odd in my book. Why cultivate a community if you don't want to be a part of it?

Yeah. Not only was the owner missing in action, the entire group went dark and has been for a couple of years now. All the stuff of the members, myself included, is forever lost.

Is the forum still up? Just no owner & members around?

Seen this several times. If nobody is around after a month or two then I'll just delete my bookmark and stop going there. Eventually the domain and hosting is going to expire and it'll go offline on its own so why should I bother continuing to be there.

No. You can't even access it and the domain is for sale for a ridiculous amount.

Hate when registrars aquire a domain and set the price at something crazy like $2500 because they think its valuable. That shouldn't be allowed.

Guilty.

I feel guilty, because I did this, and more than once.. but it was only because of those times when I moved.. When I moved back to Brooklyn from Harlem, and again, when I moved from Brooklyn to Upstate NY..

But I did post a topic explaining my absence, and that I wasn't dead, or kidnapped.. so hopefully the 1 or 2 members that were posting before, will come back and so.. but in the meantime, I am using the quiet time to relearn everything I forgot about running a forum..
