Unless you mean a toy or a BB gun no, I don't. It's not very easy to get one here either.

Wow. Cookie Gun, now that's just awesome. I didn't even know something like that existed. Wow. This seems like something that should be a hit at parties on college campi.

Yes, I possess a firearm, I have never shot anyone with it.

I have several guns. All different shapes and sizes. I have used my handgun to fire warnings shots to coyotes that are too close to my house. It's just enough to get them to scatter so I can safely get inside.

The poll is about real / lethal guns, not toy guns or cookie cutters or whatever.

Anyway Ive never owned a gun. I do keep a kitchen knife in my night stand next to my bed though.

What are you going to do Nebulous...butter up the intruder and ask them to slide back out the way they got in?

i currently own a few airguns since 'proper' firearms are now pretty much banned in the UK but back in the day i owned several shotguns, rifles and handguns....used them for target shooting and hunting and clay pigeon shooting (what you lot over there call skeet shooting)..my main interest was historical tho.....had a few black powder muzzle loading weopons and was a member of a historical arms club.....wouldnt have had any qualms about self defence at the time tho......military training was useful for that

Its not a butter knife. Break into my house one night and you'll find out.

Isn't there a saying - Don't bring a knife to gunfight?

(I can understand why you wouldn't want a gun around, though...ideally people shouldn't need to be packin' for the sake of security...)

But I have the advantage, the darkness and the knowledge of the layout of my place in the dark.

In an ideal world, you are correct Durandal. However with must home invasions, the perp is carrying a gun. A knife is no defense against a gun. If didn't own a firearm I would at least own a taser. I'm not worried about a home invasion as my dogs would scare off anyone even thinking about breaking in. I also have Warning Attack Dogs On Premise signs in strategic window locations. My dogs aren't attack dogs but those signs sure would make a person think twice about even attempting to see if I do or not. The signs only cost me $1 each and I feel better having bought them.

Wait a minute - Jazzy. I respect the sentiment and concur, but let's face it, you just made a proof against your own defense. You just said your dogs aren't attack/ward dogs, and that with most home invasions, a perp. is carrying a gun - The Perp. carrying a gun isn't going to care if you have attack dogs or not. Bullets take care of those - even dogs trained for asymetric warding (taking down a gun carrier). Some dogs are tougher than others, but if a guy is packin' and means it - the dogs aren't going to stand a chance, and even less so not being ward dogs.

The difference between a criminal that is armed and dangerous and you - is that the criminal likely isn't afraid to shoot someone, and likely has experience. Unless you've got a story you've been meaning to tell to the police - I imagine you don't really have any experience shooting someone and are subject to disadvantage (range shooting isn't a practical substitute for actual take-downs).
