I have lived in this duplex for the last 3 or 4 years. I am starting to get sick of this place. Its old and everything is always breaking. The heater and AC are wall units. Its always too cold or too hot in here. Never just right.

Ive been looking around on craigslist at the listings. Ive seen some bigger / nicer places for around the same amount Im paying now. Ive been thinking about moving for a while now. The neighborhood is rough. There is always cops on my street for some reason and my car has been broken into about 5 times since Ive lived here.

At the same time, I have been here so long that I'm somewhat comfortable/familiar with my surroundings, so the grass might not be greener on the other side. If I did move out I would have to put in a 30 day notice. How can I be sure there would be anything good on the market when those 30 days are up?

I suppose I would have to move somewhere else, pay the rent and deposit there AND pay the last month of rent at the place I live at now. It all sounds very complicated and expensive, at least for that transitional month anyways.

Like they say, you have to take chances sometimes.

Life is full of risks. If you don't take any, you'll never be get anyway, let alone be better off than you are now.

Not too risky.. Just might be costly.

Actually Ive seen a few that will give you the 1st month free. The deposit moves you in.

If you'll feel safer, more comfortable and get more bang for your buck, then it's worth doing it.

Thats true. Not to mention we have a mouse / bug problem here (which is very common for old places like this one).

The pest control guy comes out like 3 times a year to spray, but it doesn't always work.

Well, if that's the case, then that's another cost that you have too - means that you would save more moving or something like that...

The landlord pays for that.

Its just an inconvenience to see a furry little visitor or a multi-legged visitor scurry by once in while. Its rare but when it does happen it scares the crap out of me.

Yeah.. Good advice.... Blow holes in my walls or floors to try to hit a fast moving target I will probably miss.

Sawn off - wider dispersion area, more likely to hit it.

Hell. I'd be scared if one crawled in bed with me!

My advice would be is to throughly check out the new place once you find one. Drive by both during the day and at night to get the feel of the area. If at all possible find someone who lives there and ask how they like the area and the landlord. Change is good but like you said, the grass is not always greener on the other side. Good luck and keep us posted as to your decision.

If/when you find somewhere else to live and you can afford to keep two places for a month, I would do that. It means that you have plenty of time to move, clean your old home, and pop back now and again to check the post, in case there is someone you forgot to inform about your moving. Saves a lot of stress.

Thats what I will have to do. Right now I cant really afford to move because Im dealing with my car issues. I wish I could move though. A nice new place to live would but just the right thing to help get me out of my stressed, stuck-in-a-rut type feeling Ive been having lately.

Maybe if I get a good amount of money from the insurance company for my car accident then I will be able to move. Either that or buy another car. Sell the one I have now and use the money from that to be able to move.

If you do ever decide to actually move, try to find a place that isn't so crime-orientated (SP?) Also... ah, never mind. I'm not feeling good tonight, so I can't think of anything else to say, but by all means, find a place you'll feel comfortable in, and find someplace that isn't crime orientated or anything like that.

Crime is everywhere in my city. You cant escape it.

Go for it. Maybe wait a little and wait and see how things go first, but I'd definitely start trying to put back some money and consider moving, because that's no way to live if you could be living better at the same price. Go for it man, but make sure you look into it really good before making any big decisions.

then give 60 days notice

is your rent not already paid for on the last month?

sounds like you need to find a much nicer place and nicer area.

the transition only takes a month.

60 days notice? Seems unnecessary.

I didnt pay the last month's rent. Thats pretty rare around here.

Most require the 1st month and the deposit up front (unless they have some sort of special like half of the 1st months rent or 1st month free)
