"Thread" or "Topic"

This is something that's been in my head recently. It seems that any discussion posted on a forum is called either a thread for a topic so let me ask this... what do you refer it as? For me, I refer them as threads yet most people call them topics.
 
I call them topics since they are a description of what the discussion is about. When I click on view new content, I look at the topic title to see whether or not it's a topic that interests me or not.

Thread. But then I like to sew and I believe we are all threads in the Tapestry of Life.
 
Isn't a 'thread' the name for all the cumulative posts within a discussion about a 'topic'?
 
I use both, without really thinking about it. It's just whatever sounds better in the sentence at the time I guess, and so that's what I type.
