How do you deal with trolls on forums? How do you deal with them from a regular member's standpoint? As a staff member?

Have you ever trolled a forum? If so, why?

As a regular member, I might report it. That would all depend on how obvious it is...

As a staff member I should take care of it

What does take care of it mean to you?

That second kind just needs some valiant heroes.

That would all depend on any previous grievances the member has committed, but generally it'd be something along the lines of warn the member and delete the trolling. I might consult my fellow staff first, if matters haven't gotten out of hand yet.

As a regular member: Report it and put the troll on ignore. Unless of course the troll is a staff member. That's happened to me before. I reported it directly to the Admin via a PM.

As a staff member: Report it and put it up for staff discussion as to what needs to be done.

Slow death by torture may work for repeat offenders. At least it will deter them from doing it again.

It depends on the forum I am a member on. Although my usual response is to either ignore it, or respond to it. As a staff member, I have largely dealt with it on a case by case basis. This is not to say that a member's track record doesn't play a role in my course of action.

Almost everybody will say something to stoke up a good argument once in awhile.

But I think there is a difference between that and 'trolling', especially if they do it in a thread they have previously not been active in.

And, once in awhile, it might be fine. It keeps stuff moving and may bring up another point of view in answer.

However, I see a difference between firing up an ongoing debate with something off the wall that is guaranteed to provoke a response and just dropping a word bomb in a random thread.

And now, I have been accused multiple times of being one.

How about that?

After knowing you for several years now, I don't believe it Doc! Like you said, there's a difference between stoking up a thread to get it moving and trolling. Trolling I have seen a recent example of and it was definitely NOT stoking up the thread. It was trolling hands down without a doubt. Oh, and it wasn't you that did it either!

You could easily be seen as a troll when you are the dumb one in a forum full of smart people as much as being the only smart person in a forum full of idiots so being a troll isn't necessarily a bad thing depending on the circumstances.

I feel though that the troll card gets thrown around far too much to evade points of view that the person using the troll card can't argue.

I used to troll a few online boards but I have matured and seen sense and have decided to act like a normal member. Unless of course it's a forum run by kids that don't know what they're doing and their forum is run on Forumotion.

I don't really deal with trolls anymore too. I had a blog a few months ago that got trolled but the situation got sorted in less than a week.

Ignorance is bliss.

I can't be bothered with stuff like that any more. Try not to pay much attention!
