Have you ever unbanned a member? Give them a second chance? Under what circumstances would this be acceptable to do?

Should banned members stay banned forever? Why or why not?

If they were a productive member at one time and a positive influence, I give them a second chance. But I always put them on probation.

That's my thoughts. If they feel bad about what happened (and its obvious they really are remorseful & they're not bullshitting just to get back in), it hurts nothing to give them a second chance. If they revert to their old ways, they can just be re-banned.

If they are a brand new forum member and lets say they are doing useless trolling or spamming, i'll warn them once or twice. If they continue, I would suspend them. If it was a more serious infraction and they are new, I may make them appeal a reason why they should come back.

On one of my forums I had an appeal section where you could appeal your suspension and ban. It worked very well!

I know an Islamic forum that used to unban all banned members at the start of Ramadan unquestionably in the spirit of forgiveness. It always worked very well too.

Personally when I ban someone that account is banned. But my forums rules always state after a month or so they are always welcome to make a new account and have a completely clean slate with the rest of the member base.
Kind of like starting over again. We had several on Semiotic take advantage of that to the benefit of the community.

I think it depends on the extreme of the infraction.

Trolling, i'll give them a few chances and warnings. But if someone lets say went to my general area and posted a bunch of porn, boom. You're gone.

Where do you cut the line for banning though?

I'd say if you gave someone a second chance, they don't deserve a third. Obviously they are going to keep doing what they're doing.
