Should the U.S. lower the drinking age to 18? 16?

Why does the U.S. require people to be 21 when the rest of the world (pretty much) doesn't? Do you think that is fair?

Doesn't matter to me since I am 29. I didn't even start drinking until 22 or 23 anyway.

Depends on the culture I guess. Over here drinking is quite normal, so normal and so easy to get at a young age that there's not rly any excitement in it. Because there's no taboo it's also not rly exciting to try, not like the first cigarette or joint anyway (talking about teenager years ofc).

I guess it's also different because 16 year olds can drive in the US. TBH if that was the case here we'd need stricter laws for alcohol.

So can't rly say if the legal age is too high, I can only say that in my country there's not really a problem with heavy underage drinkers.

One thing though... It's ridiculous you're deemed adult enough to buy a gun but not to drink alcohol IMO.

I think that people under 21 are just going to do what they want to do and drink anyway, and are going to keep doing it until the get caught by the feds.

Federal agents have better things to do than bust underage drinkers. :P

I think the age restriction is pretty silly in all honesty. If someone wants it then an age restriction isn't going to stop them anyway just make them criminals which serves no one. It's not to say I think kids should be drinking as they really shouldn't but I think it would be best to have an atmosphere where you can openly talk about it rather then criminalize it and make people want to hide it out of fear. If a teenager is to drink then it would be better if they were at home with family to ensure they don't drink too much or do any harm to themselves or others instead out in the public where they may have no one around who really cares if something happens. I think once they figure out just what it is about and all the mystery is removed then the problems that come with drinking start to lessen and possibly vanish altogether.

The funny thing is if an adult buys alcohol/cigarettes for the purpose of giving it a child then they are a criminal but if they buy a R rated movie or M rated game for the purpose of handing it to the child to play/watch then no one cares enough to make you a criminal for it. Just something I thought about when writing this post.

Well yeh that's true.

I think the current restriction just encourages unhealthy drinking habits but there's also the cultural issue of drunkenness as it seems like among the youth, it's somewhat acceptable in the sense that it's considered something comical and normal. This is where the danger lies as while a drunk kid making jokes is nothing dangerous, one who gets behind the wheel or does something stupid with some weapons is where the problem arises.
