I honestly think with just the way forums are nowadays I still feel as if Proboards is the best for free forum hosting. With forums not being as active anymore, I almost don't see a point paying for hosting for them so using Proboards won't hurt or matter.

Has anyone had any success stories with using a Proboards forum within the past 5-10 years?

I've been a member on multiple proboards forums in recent times, they're fine for what they are, but they're severely limited. I suppose if you're looking for the bare minimum of having a place to set up forums to store topics and replies, then yeah, it's a perfectly adequate solution. Some people are looking for that, and that's great!

I just really don't think it is worth paying for hosting for a forum nowadays. They are not as active as they were 10-15 years ago, sadly. I am just starting to sadly accept the fact forums just are very inactive nowadays and are not like what they were.

I think Proboards is a fine solution nowadays since you don't pay for hosting or anything. I have seen successful forums using it before such as a Megaman Legends forum.

Unfortunately, yeah, it's a dying medium, but I know I for one will cling onto forums for as long as I can :D. I understand, though, the costs associated with running a forum can get ludicrous, it's totally understandable to look towards a hosted solution to level that out. I thought about dropping my host and switching to XF Cloud, it'd save me a little bit every month, though still costs, of course.

It's a perfectly adequate solution, just be certain it's what you want before making the move, because there's no way off of Proboards, they don't export.

Just because there is less people on forums that means they shouldn't have a nice fancy place to post with all the bells and whistles? I disagree. Even if it was just me and @Webster talking to each other on here, I'd still keep it on XF. :P

Soz, hon, you've managed to attract a chatty bitch to the forum, I'm stuck here now.

I dunno anymore. I'm just kinda losing hope on forums being like they were in 2009 or way earlier. I like forums, but they are not near as active as they were. I do prefer XF nowadays, but it costs money to get a license haha.

I always prefer self hosted above anything free. Proboards is an outdated host imo.
guess some nostalgia with proboards, but never have seen success with any forums I made on it years ago. i do plan to go self hosted if i ever make a new forum with xenforo.

I don't think forums are going anywhere, anytime soon. I recently seen one of my online friends complain about how Discord is a pain to navigate to find important information, and that it's definitely much easier for forums to host this information because even if the forum goes down, the internet archive is still online and can crawl the site and make a back up. Anyways, I think Jcink is a better free forum host. You can get a database backup of your forum, if you wish to move to self hosting at some point. Proboards doesn't allow this, so you'll be stuck on their platform unless you wish to start from scratch. Other forum hosts such as Createaforum and Createmybb also allow you to get a database backup, but you have to pay for it...

I for sure have learned to just use XF the first time round for paid hosting or something else. Also didn't know that about Jcink at all, weird. Proboards does seem outdated by today's standards, and am surprised that they never changed it to have a new version or look different. Yep, I know forums are gonna be around. I hope something does happen on Facebook or Twitter which wakes the eyes of the sheep to realize those sites suck ass and forums are king.

I agree. They could even have a resurgence and become more popular than they used to be, you never know. Trends fade away and come back into fashion as time goes on.
I feel it'll take Facebook at least to shut down or do something very bad to convince folks forums are better. lol
