What do you do to save money?

I can't ever seem to save money. Every time I put some money away, something happens to make me spend it (car trouble, traffic ticket, doctor bills, unexpected high utility bills, and so on)

What do you do with the economy struggling, to save money on groceries and clothes, etc?

Groceries: I buy in bulk at Sams Club. I make large portions when I cook. I seperate and freeze for future use. Paper goods and Health & Beauty items, I also buy in bulk. Sometimes my friends and I will split the cost of certain items and share them.

Clothes: I buy clothes at consignment shops, second-hand or thrift shops. I'm not fussy when it comes to clothes as far as having to have the latest fashions. Some clothes I have found, still had the tags on them and were never worn. You can also find household items in these stores as well. I found a beautiful coffee table for only $15.00. These stores are hit & miss so you need to keep going back to check if new items have come in. Yard/Garage sales are also places where you can find items at very cheap prices.

I just don't buy anything. Works like a charm.

I assume with that statement, you live at home with your parent(s). Is that correct?

Yes.

I realise it can't work forever. Still, like you, I have no qualms about fashion. Second hand stuff works just as well... most of the time anyway.

You go through life expecting hand me downs & everything paid for by your parents. Being an adult costs money.

I don't do anything to dramatic.. I just watch for specials and stock up when there is a good deal.. but I have always kind of done that anyway.

buy supermarket own brands...............most of the time its major brand names with the supermarkets own label

if im buying something expensive i shop around for a deal...........especially by using the internet..........dosnt matter if its a new kettle (last month) to car insurance (next month) it makes sense to use the net as a tool to get a deal

getting good at making the most out of food..............hate throwing anything away............started using this site recently http://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/ full of tips and hints

i also do this which might be useful for any brits on here

basically its a market research company............they issue you with a bar code scanner (so small it can go on a key ring)......you scan your shopping...i do it as i put it away...once a week you download the info to them....takes about 30 seconds.............take a digi pic of your receipts and send them.......again about a minutes work................in return you earn points which you can redeem as vouchers for high street stores when ever you want............i estimate its going to make me about £170/$us280 in a year.......which will have in time for xmas so that will be handy....not bad for a few mwniutes work each week

I forgot to add a few others things. I cook outside on the BBQ as long as it's not pouring rain. This saves me from having to use my electric stove. I also bought energy saving light bulbs. I never leave lights on when nobody is in the room. I hardly ever use my AC. I just open windows and (if necessary) I'll put on the ceiling fans. I hang my laundry outside to dry instead of using my dryer. There's more things but I can't think of them right now.

When it comes to clothing I just don't own that much, but it's always new and generally pretty expensive. When it comes to looking good I don't mind spending the extra bucks.

For food I do the same as beowulf, buy the supermarket's own brand. Most of the time the difference is hardly noticeable and it saves you tons of money.

For the rest I moved to a smaller room because the rent was lower and I don't need the space anyway atm.

I can't say I put extra effort in it with the economical crisis though. I've always been pretty conscious about how much I spend.

Speaking of that. I live in a 2 bedroom duplex that is a nice size & has a decent size front and backyard.

Half of the street is duplex's. A couple down from me is the same exact duplex (same exact floor plan, same square footage, same everything). It was up for for rent & I seen someone doing some work on it the other day (it was the owner). I went over to ask about it, he showed me around the inside. The place was in worse shape than mine AND the rent was $200 HIGHER than what I pay. Whoever moves in there is a sucker.
