When CNN recognizes it, you got to ask how big of slaughter will it be?

I don't think it's so much that they are recognizing it now as it is just too big to ignore anymore. I would also say there is probably a sizable group of people who will still want to back the Democrats but simply want someone else to run in Biden's place on top of those who just left the party altogether. They have been using the excuse that they are just focusing on the midterms now as a way to duck out of talking about it but that excuse has an expiration date and they must know that the Democrats will eventually have to face the 900 pound gorilla in the room and they don't enjoy it one bit.

That's true but one reason (among many) that the Dems' are possibly facing a blowout is that, thanks to past Republican victories across the country, the Democratic bench ain't all there at the moment. I mean, when you lose 1,000+ elective offices over the past decade, there's a ton of individuals who, were circumstances different, be looking at higher office instead of looking on from afar.

A weak political bench means you sometimes have to dig really really deep to find a candidate palatable to voters (case in point: Joe Biden).
