Why do cats sleep so much?

Cats sleep an average of fifteen hours a day, and some can sleep up to twenty hours in a twenty-four hour period. Which raises the question: Why do cats sleep so much?

How much sleep does your cat get on average if you could guess?

My last cat would sleep all day and be up playing all night. If I had to guess, I would say she slept an average of 15 hours.

My cat's seem to always be awake. I rarely see them sleeping more than maybe once a day.

Because they're extremely lazy. I've got a cat asleep on my lap right now. She's finished chasing the cursor on the screen.
