I recall using them and visiting them back in 2008 and I think all of the changes happened more and more after the selling of the platform from Jelsoft to internet brands. Granted I don't think the decline happened right away. I base that on knowing how companies do so good then they get to a certain point then change hands/ownership then things start falling apart I see that more times than not, I'm not saying that neither of the companies could make or break the platform. Its just the patterns I have seen companies go through because no 1 person/company do anything the same as the original creator.
It does suck to see things that we know and love fail. But at the end of the day its just business and they are in it to make the buck, I am also not saying forget them and move along but it does disappoint a lot of people when they have used something that works for so long and things get changed or the quality is no longer there that it once was.
Or on the flip side it could have been already declining and the new companies attempts the revive it have been failing due to the industry competition has been threatened due to the thinning number of forum based user base has declined vs early 90s-2000s. No telling whats going on behind the closed doors.
