When they say I'm Tired

I have to take them at their word.

My mom was like that. When she said she was tired, I learned to leave her alone. Growing up, I learned to apply this to other people too.

Good idea; I don't know about your experience, but sometimes extreme tiredness can make a person unusually grouchy or ill-tempered. Best to just let it "blow over".
And sometimes there's an unknown or undiscovered health reason that's more than, or adds to a normal or casual 'day's work'.

I always interpreted it as a nice way of saying "leave me alone, or I'll rip you an ass".

My wife has major depression, so those words, when put together, stopped having meaning.
I believe her when she says it, of course, but it's so often said it's like listening to her breathe.
It doesn't even register with me anymore, even when other people say it.
I hope I'm not coming across as insensitive. I love my wife, truly.
She goes to therapy and takes medication. It's just something we deal with together.
