Spelling bees were a source of income

The Commercial-News

The following article appeared in the July 20, 1911, issue of the Warren Review newspaper...

"... It was in the late 1870s; the old gentleman had held one of his spelling matches in the Gravel Road School house. He procured the privilege of using the building from the trustee, and offered a prize of a 5-cent lead pencil to the champion speller, and charged an admission fee of 5 cents.

He cleared about $2 at the Gravel Road School, and after staying all night with a friend, went on to Independence, where he advertised to hold another spelling match in the evening."

It's long been known than a smelly pair of feet bears more than a slight resemblance to a block of ripe cheese, but scientists have taken this link to the next level.

Experts have made the stomach-churning creations using bacteria from the human foot as well as a belly button and even an armpit.

Scientist Christina Agapakis and scent expert Sissel Tolaas gathered microbes for their project 'Selfmade' which recently debuted at an exhibition about synthetic biology in Dublin.

Ms Tolaas said on her website: 'Selfmade is a series of ‘microbial sketches’, portraits reflecting an individual’s microbial landscape in a unique cheese.'

British Pair Drag Tuk-Tuk Into Record Books

bskyb_image_272679_v2_cegrab_20131125_001827_592_1_400x240.jpg

Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pushing their vehicle the last 43 miles (70km).

Richard Sears and Nick Gough, currently in Peru, have travelled at least 23,300 miles (37,500km) in aid of grassroots education projects in Africa, Asia and South America.

If they can get their motorised rickshaw through northern Chile they will become the first people to have driven a tuk-tuk around the world.

They set off from London on August 13, 2012, and have crossed 37 countries.

A wife hit her cheating husband where it hurts - by changing the sign over his favourite pub to: "Paul, I am divorcing you."

The Noah's Yard in Swansea, South Wales, has a magnetic shop sign which can change its lettering, reports The Mirror.

So the scorned woman persuaded the landlord to let her use it to name and shame her partner after discovering his infidelity.

The fuming wife later changed the sign to read: "Btw, I am keeping the dog."

Three Doctor Who fans achieved a long-held ambition this week - when they flew a life-size Tardis over Devon.

The remote-controlled Tardis, powered by tiny rotors, made its maiden flight over countryside near Hatherleigh.

However, it looked to be its first and last flight - as it ended with the Tardis crashing to earth and smashing to pieces.

The Duke of Cambridge is to become a full-time student of agricultural management at Cambridge University from next week, Kensington Palace says.

Prince William will learn about issues facing the UK's rural communities and farming industry during the 10-week bespoke course.

The studies are expected to give him a foundation for when he takes over the Duchy of Cornwall from Prince Charles.

It is thought the duke will live in Cambridge for part of the time.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said the prince was "very much looking forward" to the course, which runs until mid-March.

Eleven year-old Utah girl gets trapped in washing machine

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (KSL) -- An 11-year-old was bruised, distressed but OK after being stuck inside a washing machine for about 90 minutes.

The Utah girl was playing hide-and-seek with her cousins when she found what she thought was the ideal hiding spot the washing machine located just below a dryer.

"She really wanted to win," said the girl's mother, Nicole Rhoades, who wasn't home at the time.

Rhoades' older daughter called her, and she could hear the 11-year-old screaming in the background.

100 chickens discovered in small SUV during Grand Island traffic stop

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A police officer making a traffic stop early Friday found nearly 100 chickens in a small sports utility vehicle.

The officer had pulled the driver over just before 1 a.m. for driving without headlights on, said Grand Island police Sgt. Bud Edwards.

When the officer approached the 2004 Nissan SUV to visit with the driver, he noticed “a couple of chickens sitting on the back seat,” Edwards said.

The birds had apparently escaped from a “makeshift cage” in the back of the vehicle, he said.

A Chinese teacher has her work cut out - after finding that 20 of the 22 children in a new class are twins.

Xu Fei, 28, who works at a primary school in Wuhan city in central China, said it made for a lot of confusion in the classroom.

She said: "Nine of the 10 sets of twins are identical twins and that makes it particularly difficult because they all wear uniforms.

A Florida headmaster's daughter cost her family $80,000 when she bragged about their hefty lawsuit win in a dopey Facebook post.

Patrick Snay, 69, had a fat check coming his way after settling a 2011 age discrimination suit with the school he once headed up, Miami's Gulliver Prepatory School, the Miami Herald reported.

Snay sued the school after it declined to renew his contract and won a settlement that included $10,000 in back pay, another $60,000 to his attorney and $80,000 for him to keep.

But his daughter, Dana, nuked the deal when she posted a bratty message about the settlement on Facebook, the Herald reported.

"Mama and Papa Snay won the case against Gulliver," she wrote. "Gulliver is now officially paying for my vacation to Europe this summer. SUCK IT."

The message circulated among the former Gulliver student's 1,200 Facebook friends and eventually made its way back to the school, who claimed it violated the settlement's confidentiality agreement.

The state's Third District Court of Appeal agreed and threw out the discrimination ruling last week.
