A school in upstate New York has apologized for reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic after complaints from district residents. The pledge was read in Arabic during Wednesday morning announcements at Pine Bush High School, 65 miles northwest of New York City. Some students were angered and responded with catcalls. District Superintendent Joan Carbone tells the Times Herald-Record that she has received complaints from residents who lost relatives in Afghanistan and from Jewish parents. The Arabic reading of the pledge has "divided the school in half," she says. The district says the school's foreign language department arranged to have the pledge recited in different languages for National Foreign Language Week.

Andrew Zink, the senior class president, usually gives the morning announcements and recites the pledge. He says he allowed an Arabic-speaking student to handle the pledge duties Wednesday. "The intention was to promote the fact that those who speak a language other than English still pledge to salute this great country," the district said in a statement. On the district's website, officials said they apologized "to any students, staff, or community members who found this activity disrespectful." The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations questioned the school's justification for an apology, saying the pledge was "a simple student activity designed to promote mutual understanding."

Thoughts?

Being that the United States is made up of individuals of many cultural and ethnic backgrounds, the school allowing students of those groups to recite the pledge in their native language is completely appropriate in the context it was used in - National Foreign Language Week.

The people that complained AND the administration that apologized, should both be ashamed of themselves. Why do you let some ignorant people bully you, when you've don't absolutely nothing wrong?

Arabic is a language spoken by many people that we are allies with, and for crying out loud, they were saying the pledge of allegiance to the United States of America. I guess in the minds of these ignorant people that complained, we are at war with all Arabic speaking people and we don't want any of them pledging allegiance to the USA.

Extremely disrespectful. The Pledge of Allegiance (or its equivalent of ANY country) is designed to remind (program?) its citizens of our common national heritage. A requirement OF citizenship of this country is the ability to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, in English; The Pledge is recited at naturalization ceremonies when obtaining citizenship.

No! Having your culture and celebrating it with your family is one thing. But America was once a great nation because all those different cultures mixed together to learn one language and came together to become one people by using the best of where they came from. Now we have people who have no desire to integrate as part of this culture, hence the destructive practices of multiculturalism.
