If you were staff on a forum and another staffer banned someone, then that banned person comes to you and demands an (another) explanation or tries to appeal the ban, do you try to help them or do you refer them back to the staffer who is handling the situation?

Obviously, the banned person deserved the ban. All reported posts go into the mod room for discussion. It is there what action should or should not be taken. Once an explanation has been sent for the reason action was taken, IMO, it's no longer an issue that needs further explanation.

Not necessarily. Some mods are ban happy and should be banned themselves. I was banned (along with others) on another site because the mod was ban happy. I was invited back by the site owner and the mod has buggered off because she's a waste of space!

Besides, doesn't everyone deserve a second chance?

What if anyone here were banned. Wouldn't they expect to be given a fair hearing? If the mod doesn't like that person, will that hearing be fair and unbiased?

I think, in fairness, the matter should be re-discussed and go to the site owner for a final decision.

I agree with you 100% if it were only one mod deciding to take action. That happens, unfortunately, on some forums. Not all forums are the same. Good forums put the report up for discussion and as a team decide the course of action to be taken. If there is a personal conflict, then that staff member steps out and lets the team decide the outcome.

Depends on what kind of ban it is. If it's a temporary ban I may refer them to the staff member who banned them and they can ask them why they were banned as the staffer was the one who banned them, not me. However, if it was a permanent ban, well, when you're permanently banned, obviously you should know what you've done to deserve the ban, so if it was something obvious like spamming the heck out of the place, there should be no need for asking questions.

It would probably be best to have just one person( most likely an admin) be the final say in moderation decisions and to overlook complaints to see if the complaint is valid or not. Most likely it's not but it's not wise to just assume the staff you have are incapable of making bad decisions as they are just as human as the people they are moderating so they are just as able to make mistakes as the person who got themselves punished by a mod.

I would give the actual staff member who baned this person the message and let them handle it.

Getting banned isn't fun. Getting unbanned is fun though!!! Got banned on a christian forum for quoting some UFO lyrics. I got unbanned and they even moved the quote back into the general forum.

Forget which song it was that offended them.

On one forum I am on a member got banned and the 2nd administrator kept in touch with them because they had been friends. The Administrators wouldn't give us members the full amount of details (for good reason probably), but the banned member had registered again under another name just to cause problems.

I remember it was hard for some because the member had been there for litterally years...

I hadn't known her much at all because I was newly registerd but still...

Depends on precisely what was done wrong, if I see fowl play to have been a possibility on the administrators part, I'll back him up and at least try to get to the bottom of what criteria the administrator utilized for his punishment however, if it's not something I could see him as being not at fault for and if I feel he deserved what he got, at times, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and at least bring his name up and talk about maybe giving him some sort of a probation or give it a try at letting him return if others agree.

Banning powers should remain first and foremost with the site editor/administrators/owner. And then passed only to global moderators (if necessary) that can be trusted. That way, such scenarios as this would be avoided, most probably.

If I was put in this situation, I'd direct the banned poster who is appealing straight to the owner, who's word is final and who can assess the situation

Actually, at this stage of our forum, only if you're an administrator you are allowed to ban. The only permissions mods have are things like locking and moving topics, basic permissions like that.
