Best way to lose members

I just quit a forum today. All I asked was where to find the staff list. I asked because no members have a status rank. I got a PM from some member (not sure if it staff member or not) that they do not disclose that information. What the heck??? I figured if they won't disclose that what else won't they disclose. Why on earth would you not want members to know who is staff and who isn't?

You got in trouble just for asking where the staff roster is? What the heck? I know on one phpBB2 forum I used to frequent, the first couple times I had to consult the staff team list, because like in your case, all the usernames were the same color. I mean,, sure, like many forums the respected rank of each person was under the username, but it wasn't like how some phpBB sites where you had the legend and the usernames were in color depending on the rank. So if I needed to send someone a PM regarding an important issue, I had to rely on the staff roster so I knew that I was contacting the right person instead of someone who didn't have a clue what was going on (a member). That's pathetic.

That would be to easy... Get more creative.

How can that be too easy? You ban everyone, and you're very likely to gain loads of enemies in a heartbeat because for starters, you've forced them off your forum without rhyme or reason (even if they haven't done anything to earn a ban in the first place!) and not only that, more sensitive members could see this as a huge insult and may not want to join any more forums you come out with. So I don't understand how that could be too easy. I know it would keep ME from joining a given forum admins site any time soon, that's for sure!

Put everyone on moderation queue, and don't accept for two+ days.

Now for me, THAT alone would be a major turn off. That also sounds like something someone who's never run a forum before would try and do, though.

Yep. And probably edit most of the posts..

How would you go about doing that, though? Completely twist around everything a person says? Like maybe throw a cuss word or two in there even though your site doesn't allow swearing and make it look as though the member broke one of your rules? Okay, now my imagination's working overtime here, lol. Keep in mind I would NEVER pull crap like that.

As Ive seen on on a couple other forums lately (and in previous years), putting that 'Falling Snow' javascript on every page of your forum on every skin that you have and refusing to give members a way to turn it off or providing a skin that doesn't have the falling snow. It can get annoying to some or slow down their computers.

Agreed. I can't stand those!

I wouldn't say the best way - but a good way, nonetheless - is to be sneaky. I don't like forums where everything is done under the table. Some forums need to realize that the staff don't make a community - the members do. The members deserve every bit of consideration. It doesn't matter where you go as long as everyone is going in the same direction.

I also have a problem with power-hungry people, like staff members with a superiority complex. In their minds they always have to be right and enjoy exercising their control over the forum and other members whenever possible.

Are you attempting to say we're not always right? I'm afraid I'm going to have to perma-ban you.

Kidding, of course. I think having me on the forum is another way to draw people away!

I know when we added that Java Script last year, we did get some complaints, so after some debating we decided to just have the snow on the board index at first and not in the areas where you go to read the posts, but now this year it's even better, because we actually have it where you can turn the snow on and off right from the ACP. We also have this option for the smashing lights as well! I know that's always been a huge turnoff for me as well is when the snow is everywhere and anywhere on the forum. The snow makes the loading time lag, and once that happens, well, either do like we did and have a backup plan handy, or else get ready for loads of complaints.

Keep the forum offline for 3 weeks, send A mass email telling everyone Dont bother coming back

Dont make new content and hire some Hackers as Administrators

Is this creative?
