My laptop is running with 0% brightness, since battery life is short.
To switch from 3G to 2G there should be an option which on Android <= 2.3 was named "Use 2G network only" and placed in Settings > Network Settings > Mobile Networks. Check it. Then getting back to 3G is easy: dial *#*#4636#*#* > Phone Information > "WCDMA only" and exit.
