An easy choice for me right now - XenForo. It's a very good premium option. It looks great, feels great, and users seem to love it.
In terms of free forum software, I would have to go for MyBB
What happened to your self-hosted SMF forum?Well zetaboards until Brandon sold his soul to crapatalk. I’ve been with Mybb..phpBB3 and SMF. Back with Jcink now. It’s so simple and easy to use. I looked at xenforo... the acp is so confusing…
vB3 was perfection, utter perfection, and the plans they had for 4 looked poised to continue that perfection (at least the rough images we were shown). Such a shame IB bought them and ruined everything. I loved the vB2 days, as well, really great software!XenForo for me.
Back when I first started a forum, PhpBB was the hottest software on the market.
PhpBB2 just came out and it was awesome. We even had addons. You had to manually add them so it took a few hours to add each one. Oh and back then, dialup was the internet so... yeah.
And then PhpBB3 came out, use it for a while. Moved onto MyBB. Moved to SMF.
Bit the bullet, got me vBulletin 3 and OMG, it was the best software ever!
Then they sold out. vBulletin turned into a weird situation.
Moved to IP.Board for a long time.
Then the Messiah was born, XenForo and have stuck with them since
*hit brakes*
PhpBB wasn't my first...

They definitely were! You'd find forums where you could post, refresh the thread list and that post was halfway down the page already. Forums were so, so busy!I miss those days. Forums were in their prime back then!

Creating a forum on wordpress and managing your wordpress powered forum is easy but when you compare the forum with a proper forum script, your wordpress forums will look pretty basic.I love both XenForo and WordPress. They are the very best in my opinion.
Well, if I have the knowledge of how to do that, it's always going to be considered first but as I don't, I'd stick with Xenforo or WordPress.Creating a forum on wordpress and managing your wordpress powered forum is easy but when you compare the forum with a proper forum script, your wordpress forums will look pretty basic.
It seems that forums have moved on since I was last a frequent user of them. I'm noticing that a popular choice nowadays is XenForo, from what I've seen so far it looks like it's one of the best. It seems to be really user friendly.
My favourite used to be vBulletin, like someone else said in here mainly the 2.x and 3.x versions. I also used IPB, SMF, PhpBB and MyBB.
There were some great free hosts out there too like IF/ZB.
They are a free host but they don't make their own software. Their most popular option is an old version of phpBB.forumotion
Wordpress forums are not as powerful as other forums but they are easier to mange. If you plan to add a blog on your forum, wordpress can be the best option. Xenforo is good but I would choose free forum instead.Well, if I have the knowledge of how to do that, it's always going to be considered first but as I don't, I'd stick with Xenforo or WordPress.
Yeah, you're absolutely right about how good it is to use WordPress if you have any plans of incorporating a blog to your forum.
