Do you reply more to threads, or do you focus more on creating them?

Do you mostly attempt to respond to new topics, or do you reply to only the ones that interest you the most?

Also, how many posts do you try to make each day?

As for me, I do both. I reply to threads and I create them too. It depends sometimes if I'm in the mood or not to do both. I only reply to the topics that interest me. It depends on how many posts that I make each day. I've never really kept track of how many posts that I make when posting. I just post until I'm done posting.

Currently, I am focusing more on creating new threads.

I respond only to topics where I feel I have something to contribute to the topic being discussed.

I don't keep track of how many posts or new topics I make daily.

-Question #1: Its' a balance of both; depends on the subject and forum area.
-Question #2: Again, its' a balancing act; it just depends on both the subject in question and the forum in question.
-Question #3: Depends on the forum. For instance, on my own board - Conversations - I try to make at least 10 posts a day; over at Talk The Reds, where I'm the resident match-day commentator, it varies. Today, for example, I probably got in 60-80 posts; most days, its' usually between 5-10 posts. Elsewhere, it just depends on the days' activity.

I tend to reply more than I creat although I do believe that members of a forum should do thief best to start topics of interest as well.

In this forum there are some that go to great efforts starting topics so I always try my best to reply.

I tend to do both, if I find a topic that is interesting I will reply, but if I think of an interesting topic that isn't already posted, I'll create a thread.

I don't normally have a goal for how many posts I make a day as I'm normally very busy and can't post much. I do try to come on Off Topix as much as possible though. I honestly love this forum :)

But yes, I do reply to posts and create topics equally.

<--- Well if you look at my stats here is obvious that I post more than I create threads.  But I do try to create at least a couple new threads per day (sometimes more / sometimes less).

1. My focus works like this: 80% replies, 20% topicmaking.
2. I'll say the same as Jazzy here, I only respond to topics where I have vast knowledge or interest.
3. I don't really care. The only thing I DO care is the quality when I reply or start a new thread.

On my forum I focus more on creating them but on other forums I barely ever create threads. I should work for a more equal balance.

If I am a staff member in a forum, I will create more topics when compared to posts, as that increases the activity.
Otherwise, I will just posts, without any restriction whatsoever.

Still, it's pretty hard to create new topics(by the way, I am a staff member in seven forums. So, it's way to difficult for words).

I mostly just try to reply to topics that I have something to say. I am horrible at creating new topics/threads. I don't set post goals.

Reply more to threads started by others. Coming up with new & original topics is difficult for me.

Do you mostly attempt to respond to new topics, or do you reply to only the ones that interest you the most?

If I have something that I feel is worth saying, I'll reply to any topic, regardless of whether it's brand new or not. Of course, the more interest in the topic I have, the better quality my responses are going to be.

Also, how many posts do you try to make each day?

Over 9000! :P Actually, I don't have any specific number that I strive for. I just post when & where there's something to post about. :)

Speaking of a post count; has anyone here ever encountered a, as I like to call them, 'post count Nazi', aka a person, usually a moderator or an administrator, who on one end wants their forum to be active, but at the same time weighs & measures the quality of each post made by everyone they outrank, and go berserk on anyone whose posting quality isn't up their personal level, or just posts a lot, regardless of the quality?

If you post in the same thread more than once, there's a good chance they'll accuse you of, so called, "post count whoring", that you're posting just to boost your post count, and demand that you either drastically improve the quality of your posts or post less often.

I don't get it. What's the big deal? Why getting so worked up over a post count? :unsure2: It's just a statistical number that doesn't really mean anything, or at least anything important, so why persecuting your members over it? You want quality over quantity? Great, but who's gonna be left around to post something that meets your super high standards when you chase everyone away? :unsure2:

If that happened to me, I would demand my account including all posts and topics be deleted. No way would I stay on a forum like that.

Things like that are one of the reasons I make sure to observe (lurk) a forum as a guest for a certain period of time before joining to see what kind of treatment I can expect from the locals. I've made a mistake of joining a forum like that once. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... You know the rest.

I understand that quality beats quantity any time, and that some forum leaders want to keep low-quality posting down to the minimum, but if you're going to take proverbial swings at your members for not living up to your personal standards, might I suggest closing the forum down, or, even better, not running it at all? Might be healthier for everyone.

Uh what? Person creates thread, people reply to thread, other people reply to those replies, and so on... How are people supposed to have a conversation if they can't reply to each other?

I think it's because conversations tend to be simple, with replies often consisting of nothing more than a single sentence, maybe two, and it seems that some forum leaders out there are allergic to that kind of posts, and expect everyone to write an entire essays when talking about even the simplest of things, like whether they took a dump today or not. :dontknow:

Another type of posting intolerance I've noticed happens in a game modding communities, where a person working on a game modification posts their progress and asks the rest of the community for some feedback, and expects that feedback to be super technical, often requiring an in-depth knowledge of the modding process and the program(s) used as (a) tool(s), which is something most modders out there simply don't posses, so the best they can offer is a simple "I don't like it", or "it's good, keep it up", or something equally simple like that, which often results in a said modder raging about the lack of constructive feedback, lashing out on everyone who dared to speak their mind.

It's not much of a problem if the person in question isn't in any position of power, but if the person has even a tiniest bit of power at their disposal, you can expect post deletion, PM threats & warnings, and just a general power abuse.

I'm not making any of this up. I've seen it happen many times.

As an ordinary member I usually just reply to existing threads.

I mostly reply to threads. If it's a newer forum or one that's revamping, I may post a few threads to help kickstart some conversations.
On my forum I start most of the threads.
I will reply to threads that interest me but I will also reply to those that have 0 replies to hopefully get a discussion going. I've found that has worked in several forums I'm in.
How many posts? On mine it can vary. On others, I try to do several.
