Is freedom of speech always necessary in society? How do you feel about governments censoring us and enforcing legal punishments for not complying?

Totally against censorship. Putting people in jail for talking shit about their government? That is horrible. Words are just words!! Let people say whatever they want.

I agree. Even if they say something that's wrong and unacceptable, they'll learn later on not to say it because they'll get shamed for it down the road.

In the UK we have laws that prohibit discrimination so even as a Free Country we don't have complete freedom of speech.

For my own opinion, I'm happy to accept that there has to be some limits - it has to be wrong if someone, perhaps from a Minority, is subjected to hate.

Speech needs to be unlimited for EVERYTHING but a direct threat of your life or others.

And I must say it seems much more open to free speech here than when I used to post in 2015. I was getting multiple warnings of being banned. So bravo!

I live in England and we have no freedom of speech

How so?

We have a less curmudgeon-y ridged staff team and member base these days.

Shout out to all the active members in 2022 and our staff team @Webster @Sariki and @Tempest !

So if you offend anyone at all with your opinion you could get into trouble.

It's even worse if you express your thoughts towards a religion. I'm an Atheist and I've had Christians harass and ostracize me for not believing in the existence of their god.

While in theory being talked shit about the government officials is something every politician should accept as a part of the job, as a sign they've gone off course and should adjust their heading accordingly, politicians and other people in the position of power act offended and simply use their power, their authority, to silence the criticizer(s) by any means necessary.

For example, in my country, if you blow a whistle on a corrupted official and (s)he even gets caught red-handed, the whistle blower automatically loses their job and the official files a lawsuit against him / her for defamation, which the courts usually rule in the favor of the plaintiff.

Legal organs make a big public show over how they're supposedly investigating the whole thing, even arrest the official, detain him / her for awhile, but in the end, it's basically sport fishing - catch, take a picture & release. Nothing more, nothing less.

The whistle blower is as good as dead, since (s)he is blacklisted by all potential employers and therefore unable to get another job.

We basically just get arrested whenever we express any kind of freedom of speech.

We have a close friend in our family that joins my parents and me for Christmas Eve dinner every year and she is from London. She visited just before the Covid scam and she swore she would never go back again. She said she didn’t recognize her country anymore.

I don’t know I’m a atheist and I’ve found Christians more tolerant than atheists for the most part. Obviously exceptions to the rule.
I mean I met my wife on vacation here from Ecuador. Now here this stranger atheist American who isn’t Catholic taking her daughter away to America and they treat me like a long lost son with zero judgment.
Then the other daughter in the family marries a Jewish man and remember this is a Catholic family that goes to church twice a week and every meal gets a prayer. And another daughter of 8 in the family marries a Muslim. The only difference with this one is he allowed her to have a full blown Catholic wedding. Jesus that was long!!!! Anyways in large at least in the Latin community I find the Christian people far, far, far more tolerant than atheists.

England is a shit hole to put it nicely.

Same as me mate, you can’t state your opinion towards a religion, it’s pathetic way too many snowflakes, and oh lord don’t state your opinion towards anything happening in the world.

Basically we just have to shut the f up and deal with everything that’s going on.
