Have you ever been to a forum that doesn't allow guests, unregistered visitors to browse the forum? Instead a message is displayed telling you to register to view whats inside. Do you think that is a turn off? Do you join forums like that?

^ This. Seems like a cheap tactic to get memberships, but in the end the forum probably loses more people than they would gain by doing that.

It's a big turn-off. Unless I'm sure it's a good forum, I just pass by.

I don't mind if just certain sections are blocked to guests, but the entire forum? No.

That's a turn-off. Why would certain forums not allow visitors tour the website before signing up? You need visitors to view your forum so that they can see what the forum really looks like.
