The problem isn't guns.

The problem is fear.

At the root of nearly every argument for or against gun limits, at the root of every plea for or against gun rights, is fear.

We're afraid of losing our right to bear arms.

We're afraid of losing our loved ones to someone who is armed.

Do you agree or disagree and why?

Er... Why would the fear of losing your right to bear arms underlie an argument in favor of gun control? o.O

Atlanta • A student opened fire at his middle school Thursday afternoon, wounding a 14-year-old in the neck before an armed officer working at the school was able to get the gun away, police said.

Multiple shots were fired in the courtyard of Price Middle School just south of downtown around 1:50 p.m. and the one boy was hit, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said. In the aftermath, a teacher received minor cuts, he said.

Okay, if guns aren't the problem, what is?

People of course

Obviously people are the issue.

But not the people who own guns, oh no. That's their right to own something built purely to kill, and you're a fucking bastard if you try and take that right away. Regardless of the fact most gun-related shootings are committed with legally-owned weapons. It's hypocritical, just like how the majority of people who want [insert drug here] legalized are already taking it.

Some people would say it's the people who play violent video games that are the problem.

What's your reaction to that?

I would disagree that they are a cause. Perhaps a trigger to a mind that is already broken, but I don't feel they are a root cause. Legalize drugs, prohibition doesn't work!, Criminals get guns anyway, banning them won't work!, Ban sex ed in schools, what they don't know won't hurt them!

Violent videogames are geared towards adults. Should the blame not be placed upon those who purchase them and commit crimes, rather than the games themselves? I believe it was Stephen Colbert who said Video game violence is not a new problem. Who could forget in the wake of Sim City, how children everywhere took up urban planning.

I mentioned in another thread on this topic, that I am considered mentally ill. I have severe depression which is dealt with via medicine, along with a host of other physical and mental issues. Videogames, especially violent ones, are something of an escape for me. I also own various weapons designed specifically for maiming/killing. And yet... I haven't gone out and killed anyone. I've carried swords in public and haven't unleashed them upon bystanders, because despite my problems I'm level-headed and intelligent. This is the same for many, many people. Pro-gun activists like to rattle sticks about how everything is to blame, except the weapon used to commit a violent act.

And then they get pissed when it's turned around on them. If you're an anti-gun person, you may as well have raped Jesus while defecating on the Bible, french-kissing Obama and sitting atop a flaming steed from the depths of Hell itself.

Maybe we should ban every form of entertainment and past time.

Fear, absolutly, the media in the USA for some reason loves to scare everyone, it must be good for ratings, and yes guns.

Guns are not the problem??? true.. bullets are, and nowhere in the constition does it say you have a right to bullets, so keep your guns and make bullets illegal, after all guns don't kill people, bullets do,

I don't have a problem with guns, I have a problem with idiots, and an even bigger problem with idiots who have guns. I think the ones who are out there rushing to buy assault weapons from Walmart, and go as far as walking around with them in shopping malls, and start bitching at the mere idea of gun control, and doing other stupid shit with them (especially since Sandy Hook) are showing themselves to be the exact type of people who should not have access to guns at all.

Those bitching about their second amendment rights need to think about WHY there is a second amendment in the first place. It was written in a time where no one trusted the idea of a government established militia, and for good reason since the government they were fighting was the one they ran away from.

I think that with the establishment of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard, that it is safe to say that we don't have a problem with a government-run military force since we have our own government, so maybe it is time for a change. That amendment came about due to the brave actions of the minutemen, and yet, today it is a different type of minute men that are bitching about any change to it. Ironically enough, today's minute men, don't have ¼ the balls the minutemen did. They usually spend their time and money avoiding anything to do with serving their country, yet they always have the most to say. (Ted Nugent comes to mind.)

America has an idiot problem that it needs to solve before they can even touch guns.

Even with the right to bear arms, you don't need any type of gun. An assault rifle or other war-like weapons are not necessary for self defense, hunting or any other recreational use you might use guns for. The only thing you'd need those for would be to cause harm, which we can all agree is wrong and even if you disagree, the law says otherwise.

You can all rest easy - you won't lose your second amendment rights, at least not completely. It simply cannot happen in America. Any other country, definitely. In the USA, no f ing way (pardon my french). Even if there's not a majority that will oppose gun control, the minority is still strong enough to keep some guns in citizen's hands.

I do think we will see some form of gun control this year though. It's too present in the media, in peoples' minds, etc. to be ignored by politicians now and something will be done. Even if it's just a better system of background checks or limiting who can be an assault rifle, it's better than nothing and isn't unreasonable in my opinion.
