What is the legal minimum age for buying alcohol in your country?

Do you think it is too high or too low?

How old should someone be before consuming alcohol.

21, I think that's perfectly fine, honestly. I know at home in the UK it's much lower, and that's ok, too, but I think 21 is really where it should be.

There is no legal age to drink alcohol in New Zealand. The legal age for purchasing is 18. Also consumption under the age of 18 can only happen under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian. I grew up here so it makes sense to me.

18.

If government thinks you're old vote for the franchise at 18 and you're old enough to serve in the military at 18, then you're damn well old enough to drink.

Any age is too low in my opinion. Alcohol does too much damage to be allowed to even exist. Humans don't want to drink responsibly. They want to get drunk and turn into monsters, no matter what anyone says.

"In England, Scotland and Wales, it's not illegal for someone between the ages of five and 17 to drink alcohol at home or on other private premises."

From Drinkaware.

18 is fine to buy alcohol. At 18 the Mental Capacity Act kicks in and therefore you're legally allowed to make decisions for yourself, even bad ones. So why not consume alcohol?

Alcohol is the destroyer of families. Drunk humans are prone to abusing, if not killing their family members, a quite common occurence. One of those two things has to go. Either alcohol or the concept of a family. If humans value alcohol over their own kind, so be it, but in that case, stop reproducing, stop creating new humans who are helpless against your alcohol-fueled rampages. Drink yourself to death if you want, but don't let anyone else suffer because of it.

18 here.

It's 18 here in Australia.

16-17 with parental supervision.
Do you agree with those ages for alcohol consumption?

I think 21 is fine because I had to wait until then so everyone else should too! :P

Really though I didn't start drinking until I was like 23 or 24.

That is really ironic, because 23 or 24 was when I drastically cut back on my drinking.

We have a drinking Culture here in Australia so it's hard to say :D

Most people here do it illegally at 16 anyways.
I didn't have my first drink until I was 18.

When did you start?
Heavy drinking, or just drinking at all? Because we don't have a legal consumption age here so I used to drink at family functions from when I was like 12. Got drunk for the first time when I was 4 though. Apparently I drank from someone's wine glass when they went to the toilet. Heavy drinking started when I was 18 though since I had moved away from home and was living in a student hostel.

Wow, you sure started young! I thought part of the reason most places have age limits is because it negatively effects the development vital organs if consumed too early. I am no doctor though :P

Yeah, that is what I have heard too. It didn't really happen that often prior to me moving away from home. Although it really kicked off then. But then by about 23 or 24 I was over it. Although my partner at the time was a big influence on this. Since she confided in me about how she had gone through some personal experiences around alcohol as a teenager so it was difficult for her to be around heavy drinking.

It does sound rather mad that you can be charged with crime as an adult at 13 yet cannot rent a car until the age of 25. That said, I agree with charging 13 year ould criminals as adults because at 13 you should know right from wrong.
