How do you select moderators?

Have you ever hired a complete stranger? How did that work out?

If you select a bad moderator, what toll could that take on a community?

On my group I never had moderators, it was just me. I've seen too many instances of other forums selecting bad moderators to see what happens after and I was not going to put myself through that headache.

How do you select moderators?

Promote from within. If we feel we need another staff member, we'll reach out to a member who seems like they would be a good fit for our team.

Have you ever hired a complete stranger? How did that work out?

Like I never interacted with them at all before promoting them? Nope.

If you select a bad moderator, what toll could that take on a community?

It could drive members away or make them want to be less active. It could ruin your forum's reputation / prevent people from wanting to join the forum, etc.
