Read the rules

Do you like it when people tell you to read the forum's rules in your intro thread or do you think the person doing it is a douche bag?

Personally I find it to be a turn off. I don't need to be told that. Intro threads are about being warm and friendly..... Giving a good 1st impression. Telling me to read the rules doesn't give off a good 1st impression to me.

It's never happened to me but if it did, I would not like it. I read the rules before I join a forum and don't need to be told again to read the rules. It's rude and uncalled for. To be honest, if this happened to me, I would leave the forum.

Happens alot to me but doesn't make a blind bit of difference as I never read the rules lol.

Hasn't really happened to me except for in automated messages. I don't particularly care, I don't really read the rules anyway most of the time.

The first thing I do before joining a forum is to read the rules. There have been some forums where the rules were so ridiculously strict that I just laughed and never registered. I join a forum to have fun and not be afraid to post without breaking some asinine rule.

I don't necessarily have a problem with it. Cause with some, you may have to give out a reminder on it in case they didn't to begin with.

Yeah I hate it when people do that, it feels like they are shoving the rules down my throat. I always read the rules before joining a site and I feel like when they remind you to read the rules it's insulting I'm not sure why but it's insulting to me.

I've had people say this to me on forums before, and personally, it's a major turn-off right there. I do read the forums rules, so I don't exactly need to be told to read them. Or else I'll check the rules if there's something I want to do but I'm not sure if it's allowed or not. Otherwise, telling people to read the rules is a huge turn-off, and that's something I never do on my own forum. If members break a rule that they didn't know about, that's not mine or the other staff's problem, if they had read the rules, they wouldn't have gotten into trouble in the first place!

I guess that's one way to do it. As long as it's not something that'll likely get you into trouble, that's the main thing, really.

I haven't encountered any forums that do that. Though I do sometimes get PM's from Mods/Admins with a link to the rules. I tend not to read the rules anyway

Well, I don't read the rules right away, but like I said, I will do a quick check of them if there's something I want to do but I'm not sure if it's allowed, or else I'll do it when I'm bored, but I do agree that with a couple exceptions, a lot of forums do seem to have the same sort of rules as the other ones do.

Any member of staff has no right to tell anyone to read the rules when that person has just joined, unless if the new member does anything wrong or misunderstood the etiquette of the forum.

Agreed. Members should be able to read the rules when they want to. We only point members to the rules on our forum if it's a minor rule infraction that only calls for a warning, but we never say, have fun and remember to read the rules!

If they only told me to read the rules, I think I'd be a bit ticked, but honestly, I don't really care if staff tell me to read the rules when I first join. In my opinion, they're just trying to get everyone to be on the same page. They're not telling you to read the rules or die, it's more of a suggestion so that your forum stay will be more enjoyable. At least, that's the way I've always seen it.

Well, I've been foruming long enough to the point where I know to read the rules. So now, especially since I've been foruming for so long, I get thrown off when people tell me to read the rules almost the second after I create an intro topic.

Yeah, but not everyone has been foruming for long periods of time and as a new member, previous members and staff don't know how long you've been on forums (unless you mention it in your thread of course). I don't know, personally, I don't make a big deal about it. If they tell me, they tell me. They aren't forcing it down my throat, I have the option of ignoring their suggestion.

it depends............i was a long standing member of a forum which closed recently..................becouse of the type of forum that it was we had rules which dont normally appear on forum......often you would have noobs join and straight away break the rules....mods would remove thier posts/threads and give them a warning.............often regulars would tell these ppl they had broke the rules and should go and read them before a mod got to them first to avoid punishment

I always read the rules first before posting at all. So if someone replies and tells me to read them I will just reply back that I read them already.
