In general I don't like those Harlequin series romances, those things are just smut with a fancy cover. Otherwise I'm willing to give a book the benefit of the doubt. I tend to shy away from purely political books, but I do enjoy reading biographies of famous politicians.
I've written exactly ONE "formula romance novel" (Miss Jazzy's 'harliquin' romances), and it was accepted by the publisher if I made various changes to it... I made the changes, and I hated what they did to the underlying story, and then they REJECTED it for exactly the same reasons, which, essentially, ended my relationship with that publisher. I still have the original three part novel if anybody would like to read it.
And I have read at least parts of the various religious texts listed in Beowulf's post. And you can add some he may never have heard of such as the "Bhagavad Gita" (the Song of God), the "Hurukotohumi" (the Record of the Past), and so on. They are, in a word, Fascinating, even if one does not accept them as anything more than an interesting historical book.
The 50 Shades books. Just not interested. I am not a follow the pack reader...I do not read books just because everyone else is. So, unless it is a genre I am interested in, I won't read. The trashy romances too. Never got into them.
The Harry Potter books never did it for me either.
