Sales of vinyl albums rose by 40 per cent last year despite a fall in CD sales and an overall decline in the music market, official figures show.

The BPI, which represents the British music industry, said that 337,000 vinyl LPs were sold in the UK last year, the highest figure since 2005.

Industry insiders put the rise down to the superior sound quality of vinyl albums and the growing popularity of Record Store Day, an annual event which last year saw artists such as Lady Gaga and Kings of Leon put out vinyl-only releases.

However despite the rise in vinyl's popularity, the music industry saw overall sales decline in 2011.

CD sales dropped by 13 per cent to 86 million albums while digital album sales grew by a quarter to 27 million, the BPI said.

Overall, album sales across all formats fell by almost 6 per cent to 113 million.

The biggest-selling album of the year was 21 by Adele. The album sold 3.8 million copies, making it the biggest-ever selling album in a single year.

Geoff Taylor, the BPI’s chief executive, warned that the Government must take “decisive action” to stamp out music piracy, which costs the industry million of pounds in lost revenue.

“Unless decisive action is taken in 2012, investment in music could fall again – a creative crunch that will destroy jobs and mean the next Adele may not get her chance to shine on the world stage,” said Mr Taylor.

Question: Have you bought a vinyl album lately?

Can't say that I have, I don't even have the thing required to play one.
