When do you think its time for a forum to change it's theme's / skins?

Personally I hate vibrant colours on forums as it usually makes it difficult to read. If it looks okay why is there a need to change it?

Most forums have a skin selector these days so there's no need to change the skins, just add some new once in a while.

I totally agree with Cranos.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, is the saying; I agree with that, for the most part. A skin/theme is a bit like the fashion of the website, though. For example, I'm sure the ladies on here would love to get a new set of shoes, and a nice new summer dress, or something to the like (a new hat, overalls, skirt, earrings, hair colour...something of the nature)...guys like to get something new to wear here and there as well, so 'wearing' a new look isn't necessarily a problem as long as it is in good taste, and really that's up to the community at large. If something looked bad, I'm pretty sure everyone would complain. It's not a problem to spruce things up, particularly in the tech. world...every two years or so is probably good to don a new look (a la Moore's Law), since that is about the equivalent of a human decade of style. Keeping consistent is one thing, but unless she's rockin' big hair, I'm guessing Rapunzel is in 2010.

When I open my forum it will be each Christmas. Gives the forum a bit of a present

We usually change the skin around holiday time. Actually, what we do is we take the default theme and switch it up a bit by modifying it so that it looks a bit more festive for the holiday. Other than that, we don't ususally do too much switching up.

Change in style is good once in awhile, to avoid stasis...and the use of too much hairspray

It was a comparison of human fashion changes and web fashion changes

I know of one site that had the same theme since it opened in 2007. It's still on PHPBB2 and while the themes are nice, they are kind of outdated. Otherwise I'd have a few mods I'd be requesting right about now.

Lol, I don't have hair like that and I'm not rocking back to the 70s/80s. And 2010 is still in date - at least for another 4 days.

I'll be out of date on Saturday.

lol, well that is what I was 'meaning' - we don't have the 80s styles today, so like humans, websites shouldn't overdo it (Jersey Shore is an example of overdoing 2010), but it's good to keep with the times and progress.

So you're saying we should move forward - but shouldn't overdo it?

That's quite a cautious attitude.

I would have thought you were more avant-garde, the sort of person to be at the forefront of modern innovation.

That's interesting.

Bold and Cheesy are two different things. The Tusk Album by Fleetwood Mac was bold; their Mirage album was mostly Cheesy. Both moved forward, see? Moving forward for the sake of moving forward isn't good. Moving forward with purpose, with positive constructive purpose, is. To go from 80s big hair to...EVEN MORE HAIR! would've been a bit defeating. Instead, in the U.S., we transitioned to a period of 'Grunge' a la Nirvana et al...over on the other side of the puddle...erm...seizure-inducing techno-club dance music? ...and then we all settled on boy-bands...

Well, neither did I, but I guess I'm just taking the proportion of the bigger picture here.

Sometimes it is only the few that have good taste.

So you like bold and you don't like cheesy, hair, grunge, techno or boy bands. Do I have it right this time?
