What's it like administrating a forum?

It's challenging but it's fun. The rewarding part is when people log in and post or new members join but it's not so easy these days so you'll need to have a lot of commitment.

What's it like administrating a forum? I'm considering starting my own.
On some forums its' like being a small-town town marshal.
On others? Its' like trying to herd goats.

On the really small forums, the owner is more than enough to police them and that's IF anyone gets out of line. Now if it's a really big forum, you can get a a lot of staff to help out.

IF, and only if that is, you can find some staff that: Want the job, -AND- will actually DO that job the way it should be done, WITHOUT running most of the members off.

I can imagine trolls being a PITA on a large forum, especially if they’re old timers, running newer members off

Oh yes, so many mods and admins these days are ban-happy towards anyone they have different views with.

It’s rare to find mods who’ll only take the action necessary like deleting posts BEFORE letting their emotions take over and allowing the thread get out of hand and then resorting to unnecessarily heavy-handed tactics.

I couldn’t have said it better, toxic posts by members are often reciprocated with toxic posts from management. And that’s off-putting for any new member.

It's rewarding running a forum, but it's a lot of work and requires a lot of persistence. Success doesn't come overnight, if it comes at all.
Thanks for sharing your view :) I can imagine that, countless nights of working on SEO and building connections elsewhere. What was you main promotion tactic besides on other forums that allow such?

Word of mouth worked best. Get a friend or two on board, get them to tell a friend or two, and so on.

Oh sure, I can imagine! TheAdminZone seems like a good place for such!

It’s interesting that even free forums can be so successful in fact! :D Glad to hear it, I should start my own :)

administrating a forum.. well, it has good bits and bad bits

I love that I can control what goes on my forum and what doesn't, and I love the fact I can ban someone (the first time I banned someone was a huge rush)
it can, however, drain you- when people either don't post, or leave the site. I remember for the longest time I had an issue with nycole creating accounts, and it got so old that there was a time I thought well she can't create an account on a forum if said forum doesn't exist

I own a forum called chattergories (a thread about it exists here, I'm sure of it)

it's just a general off topic forum

and yes, she was. she used to use loads of different IP addresses

other admins would pass on to me names she used on their sites, so it soon started a cycle. I'd be made aware of it, and be sure they don't get in

I actually had 3 accounts of hers on my forum before I was told about it
