If you're an admin do you use word censors on your forums?

Do you like them? Are they necessary?

What words do you think should or shouldn't be censored?

I used to have to censor lots of words for a huge community I ran, because it was considered 13 and up, so...had to be PG. These days I don't really censor anything except words that cross into things like racism or extreme bigotry.

Fuck fuck fuck.

I doubt Nebby has a censorship :p

We just censor the n-word because there is no context in which that would be acceptable. Joking or not. We had a member post it a while back nobody approved.

Any other word is fair game. I am not offended by words. They are just words. There is no word censors when you're talking to people in the real world.

If and when I did own a forum, I didn't sensor anything unless it was racist/bigoted/threatening or harassing.

Running a forum means exposure to all type of people - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Censoring protects the good from the bad. It is essential to a good board.

I was on a Canadian's forum where the owner changed the word "snow" to marshmallows. :p That was a word he did not want to hear.

As far as banning the "N" word.

I guess you haven't been to any rap music and urban culture forums and message boards.

You should've been here a few months ago, Doc.

Serafin posted a thread with the n-word right in the thread title - he didn't abbreviate it or use any euphemism for it - and spazzed out when I told him (in the thread, not via PM) that I removed the n-word from the thread title. That's the only time I can remember anyone on staff here (at least, since OT returned; I can't speak for the Wober years) has ever censored anything in a thread.

Such a use was obviously intentional, and he probably got the reaction he was looking for.

I don't censor because I don't believe in censorship. People should be free to decide for themselves. For those who are offended, I have this advice - Man up and grow a pair.

Thanks!

There was also the time when I changed the C-word to "Piers Morgan", which had the following result:

Lol. You're trolling your members. :P
