I visited another forum and saw something I have never seen before. They have a forum dedicated for the sole purpose to list banned members. They not only list them, they explain why they were banned and how long the ban will last.

Have you ever seen such a thing?

Your thoughts on having a dedicated forum like this for everyone to see?

What forum was this?

On a forum I was on back in 2009, there was a section like that full of banned spambots, visible to registered members. But IMO, that section should be limited to staff. If someone's banned, it's only between him/her and the staff and no other people should be asking questions about it.

Doesn't matter. I wanted answers to my OP questions.

Okay, my thoughts are that it seems to be a waste of time. Kind of just adds in some forum drama and profiling members and trolls. Some people might get some entertainment out of it. But I've never come across a forum that had a registry page on banned members.

I've seen it before.

I suppose in theory it makes sense because almost every time someone on a forum is banned, members will be asking questions, wanting an explanation.

However, I personally think those types of things should be discussed privately. Perhaps an inquiring member should send the admin a PM or contact the banned member on another forum if they really have to know.

I agree with Richard; once someone's been banned from a board, why make them a punching bag further? That just seems a little childish or whatnot.

On a forum I moderate, I was forced to ban an active member due to a variety of reasons. Of course, once the ban was put in place, people were asking questions as to why. I see no reason to lie, or ignore those questions. In many cases, a forum may be the sole method you have of speaking with somebody, and if somebody you know/like is banned, you may have no way of contacting them further. So at least finding out why seems fine.

Having a dedicated section is too much, in my opinion. I would opt for a closed thread updated by staff members, detailing who, why, and how long. Stifle the drama before it starts.

I never agreed with doing something like this. Honestly, why bring light to someone who has been banned? If they've been banned it's because you don't want them in the community or recognized by the community anymore.

I would list it for staff to view only. Not all members of the forum.

I have never seen this before either and just thinking about it my one forum of 10 years would have a list of three people in that area lol

This ^^^ it seems childish to put them on blast like that....

I would not have a banned forum for forum members but we have a "banned" from server forum for our BF4 gaming community, but this is a bit different because players can come back with a different name ip address etc so we list all info so that if a known trouble maker try to get on our game server the admins can check against the banned list to help decide whether to kick or ban a player.

Have you ever seen such a thing?

Yes, but it was just a single thread, sort of a 'Hall of Shame' thing.

Overkill. Dedicating an entire forum is too much. If you're going to do that, a single locked thread where only the staff members can post is enough. No need to devote an entire section to the public crucifixion of your members.

Is it a good idea to even have something like that? I suppose it could serve as a deterrent to discourage potential troublemakers. I mean, if you throw a criminal into the stockades and publicly display him for everyone to see, point, mock & ridicule, chances are the potential future criminals will think twice before committing a crime, since they'll know what fate awaits them if they get caught.

I suppose in theory it makes sense because almost every time someone on a forum is banned, members will be asking questions, wanting an explanation.

I know a forum where asking for an explanation is a punishable offense. Basically, if you ask why someone got banned, it goes into your rap sheet and an administrator tells you to shut up.
