Cross-site punishments

Forum rules are not exhaustive and common sense applies. On pretty much any forum disrespect towards forum staff is not tolerated.
Right but in this particular situation, the mod in question was fired and banned from the forum they were at previously for intentionally targeting a member, and then ended up being a mod on another forum, and was talking shit about the same member they were abusing. They ended up getting fired from that site too because the same member was on that forum as well, and I guess they ended up showing that admin the proof of why this mod was fired.

I guess if anything it just goes to show that you should be careful about who you hire on your forum..

100%. I don't tend to ban for behaviour displayed on other forums, unless MAYBE those toxic behaviours are consistently exhibited in multiple forum communities - at the very least the member would be under additional scrutiny.

However, hiring is a different story altogether. I believe pre-existing reputation follows you everywhere, but I also believe that age is a factor; ppl evolve especially if they were a kid when they initially joined a forum.

Would you ever ban/sanction a member for behaviour on other forums? Is this something you've ever done or something you've considered doing?

No for the reason that they committed those acts on the other community. It's good to give people chances. If they are an abusive member, then it won't take them long to come onto the new community and break its rules (x) amount of times and get banned. But if they learned from their mistakes from the other times they were banned, then there is no issue.

If they're THAT bad then it's up to certain people higher than forum staff to deal with them. If they're just a nuisance and they're a nuisance here, let 'em be a bit then slam the hammer.

I've seen people get banned on a forum for stuff on their Twitter and it affected said site's reputation a good bit, real long story. In any case it's not a good idea since every forum has its wee little rules that conflict with each other.

Even if they go around posting illegal content or they're a known criminal?
I LOVE challenging debates :p
I hope your answer will be there are exceptions for everything :p

How would you know someone's a known criminal, though? Lol.

Wasn't this something that used to be done on "Web Rings" where being stupid on one site could get you thrown off all the member sites?

It depends on the situation and what they were banned for. I know of someone who got banned on forum 1 and was still a member of forum 2 shortly after. I informed the admin of forum 2 (I didn't keep track of what happened afterwards), because what he did on forum 1 was a bannable offense on forum 2 also and a violation of laws that should involve police investigation. Most of the time, unless you're staff, you won't know what a member was banned for, as they would also remove the offending posts. So, just for seeing someone as "banned", I don't think that's enough of a reason.

I mean if you manage both forums? :P

What did they do that would require police intervention?

When I had forums, I sometimes got requests to ban someone or give them warnings because they've done something on XYZ forum and I should do the same thing at my place. That's not how it works. Just because someone is displaying poor behavior on one forum, that doesn't mean they'll behave similarly on mine. Besides that, the site the behavior took place on and my place..me and the other owner could have very different niches and therefore we'd most likely be enforcing very different rules.

That happened to me about a month ago. Someone from another site was on here snooping around, saw what I was typing here and tried to call me out there. When I put them on blast by saying I wasnt breaking any rules on that site, their tone changed.

Let me guess: GWF?

It very much depends on what they did on the other community. If it's small and something you can easily shrug off, no punishment, but I will make a note for staff to keep an eye on them. However, for more serious offenses, posting illegal content, severe member harassment, etc I will pre-ban for current member safety. My mentality as a community owner or moderator is that if it happens off site [or out of server if on Discord], it's none of our business.

I've been a victim of cancel culture and spreading false rumors quite a bit. This has transferred from forums to Discord. Now I regularly see mass bans of the same person in various servers because apparently "if one server bans someone, we all will!" In some cases I get it, but in others it makes no sense.

This might be the one thing I would always refuse to do... seems incredibly unfair and pretty much denies that member the opportunity to show that they have grown and/or learned from their mistakes.

Case in point, I had to IP Ban someone on a board because of some pretty dodgy thing they had done, but then I encountered them again on another forum years later and they were a perfectly good member.
