Do you enjoy digging through the Webarchive?

My first sites were about gameshark code hacking for the game WWF Wrestlemania 2000, lol, then WWF No Mercy. Code hacking was so much fun!
Yooooo! I love those games! I still play RAW with my nephews ;D

Indeed it was... here's my pet project: "Major League Mushroom" XD

Nice!! Code hacking was how I first got into web development, and then into programming, so I owe a lot to my early love of Gameshark/action replay and sitting fiddling away figuring out little hex codes hour after hour of every day, lol. Fun times!!

That's beautiful :)

I never ventured further than that, but I had a lot of fun just trying to figure out the inner workings of games I liked... hacking away at Hex Editors I found a way to increase the number of units I could create on "Dune 2". Copying and renaming files taught me how to change the planes' colors on "Knights Of The Sky". And subbing-in files allowed me to play as CPU-only warplanes on "Combat Flight Simulator". Such a fun thing. Made me feel like a hacker XD

Definitely! It was such much fun swapping textures, adding new characters, making new movesets, or creating new match types in the WWF games, and seeing something you made actually work was so rewarding. It really did feel like hacking the game, no question! It was so, so fun!

Oh, absolutely. Just messing with the visuals or stats of games was an artform in and on itself.

Speaking of which... we used to have a world-class "4D Driving/Stunts" tournament that ran from 2002 to 2007 (it was actually my first time seeing Europeans in-game!) and one constant point of argument was the inclusion of user-made cars.

Amazingly, the site is STILL UP: http://wrcstunts.free.fr/

And so is my friend's Sims site (last updated: 2004, before I even met her): http://chasque.net/dana/

This site has survived everything that it links to, including its very own guestbook!

Oh wow! The old internet, as it SHOULD be.

I like this one because it was not only "digestible" social media, but also acted as a "hub" for twelve other subdomains, which I find intriguing (and honestly feels like a great idea). If you wanted, say, relationship advise, then all you had to do was following the link to that page on the index. Likewise, if you DIDN'T wanna read any of that tar, then your chances of running into it were zero. I guess that's why the site managed to cling onto dear life for as long as it did, but sadly... the index is still online, but every access point has been boarded off with a message saying that it's the end of the ride :(

----

Also: about 25 years ago, someone someone graffiti'd their damn email on a wall near my house, calling on to all the girls to add him... and not only was that the very first mention of Hotmail (or email in general) that I had ever seen, but it's also STILL THERE. And following it led me to a BlackBerry forum from 2003... you can't make this up.

PS: Given the context of my introduction to it, I thought Hotmail was porn for the longest time XD

That one actually looks more tolerable, I'll agree. Different from the usual "COME HERE AND TELL US EVERY DETAIL ABOUT YOUR LIFE SO WE CAN GATHER ALL THE INFORMATION AND SELL IT" approach.

Nice way to have your information sold to every bad list on the internet, lol. I bet that person got a LOT of spam :D

lol, totally understandable! If that's how I was introduced to hotmail, I'd think the same thing!

I think that site had the right idea... but I swear it's giving me brain damage XD OP would be like August 13, 2005 and the first reply would be... August 11, 2005. And that's on EVERY THREAD.

Other than that... I really like it. I like how the focus was on making friends, and so many of the buttons allowed you to start instant-messaging your fellow users on AIM, MSN, or Y!

You know? Never thought about it... but you are right! The Spam musta been insane XD

Yeah, it's great when they actually PLAN a site out properly! Do things right it can be magical!

lol, absolutely, he must've been getting all kinds of Nigerian princes and male enhancement offers in his inbox :D

HAHA! The classic internet scam ;D

But considering he labeled his email as being "for the girls", I wanna believe that he got unheard-of amounts of trolling. I'd have trolled him too if I wasn't like... six XD

This is something I really wanted to share with you: a webmaster's personal diary and commentary on what was like running his incredibly sucessful site from the early days of the scene to its bitter end.

I hope so, lol, putting yourself out there like that, you're asking for some serious trolling :D

That's amazing, what a detailed look at his site! Really great that he kept that going!

Hahaha. The admin has claws ;D

Yeah, I'm honestly glad he put that out there (he even backed up his forums to fix any unreliability the WebArchive had).

Since asking you to read all of that in another language would be ludicrous, I'm gonna say that he ALMOST re-launched and revamped the site... but the ToS of his hosting provider changed and threatened complete deletion of everything he was working on (including his personal stuff). So that was the end of that.

Aww, that's unfortunate. If he's ever up for it again I think he'd have a good chance at rebuilding, and he could find a good host that would work with him. But I understand, hosting providers have their limitations and he has to be protective of his content, makes sense.

I'm actually not sure that would work... GoG and Steam have been hunting down Abandonware sites ever-since they launched, and webhosters were never too kind to them even at the best of times (famously, Home Of The Underdogs would be deleted like thrice a month, and its masterfile of mirrors would be 15 screens long). But even without all that... there was a lot of badblood there. This guy's site was DDOS'd once because it was growing "too big". So... yeah.

And while unfortunately I can't show you, I found the long-lost profile of a friend, whose comment history spawns the last 16 years at the newest end. I'm beyond pleased :)!

Ah, fair, that does make a lot of sense. But if they can keep hate sites on the internet flowing freely (and they do, so many anti-trans hate forums out there spewing their garbage and targeting people illegally), then it should be possible to keep those sites online.

That sounds fantastic :)
