[NEW SMYRNA BEACH — Starting Jan. 1, Bert Fish Medical Center will no longer hire tobacco users, joining two other local hospitals in telling smokers not to apply.

Applicants will be tested for a nicotine byproduct and sign an agreement to remain tobacco-free during their employment with the New Smyrna Beach public hospital. The prohibition doesn’t apply to volunteers, medical staff or Bert Fish’s roughly 700 employees who were hired before the implementation date.

“We are in the health care business, and we should be a role model,” said Nancy Evolga, executive director of human resources for the 112-bed hospital. “There is 50 years of data that says tobacco use is bad.”

Kind of hypocritical, no?

No one is allowed to smoke on hospital property where I work.

Because smoking is bad for you, your boss can say, don't do it, and if you do, there's the door.

So, if it is unhealthy or perhaps risky, your employer should be able to mandate your outside behavior.

It is well proven that drinking sodapop is bad. So is booze. We can test for both residual alcohol and excessive sugar in the blood. Is that next?

Riding a motorcycle can be hazardous to your health. Easy enough to check ownership of one and the endorsement on your license.

Oh, gee you like to roller blade, sorry, that is risky.

Where do they stop?

Case in point:

9 September 2013

A South African man facing deportation from New Zealand for being too fat has been given a 23-month reprieve.

However, Albert Buitenhuis will not be allowed any publicly-funded healthcare, a government official said.

The chef, who weighs 130kg (20st 6lb), appealed two months ago after his work visa renewal application was rejected on the grounds he did not have "an acceptable standard of health".

"will not be allowed any publicly-funded healthcare"

Fascinating, no?

I suppose it makes sense. But just because someone has bad personal habits, that doesn't make them less talented/skilled in performing health care related tasks. For the most part I guess.
