My best recent post-Fergie memories of them....Premier League - Manchester United
Now ya' know how we Liverpool fans felt when Fergie was running United....that said, if I had to give a short list of great managers, he's on that list.Yeah we been pretty bad recently but gotta take the rough with the smooth as they say.
I have a framed picture of a Bolton Evening News cover image from when Bolton beat United, during the Fergie Era. Such a wonderful game!My best recent post-Fergie memories of them....
(a) the 5-0 thumping we gave 'em at Old Trafford last year and (b) the subsequent 4-0 thumping we delivered to 'em back at Anfield.
He's near the top of any list, as much as I hate United...he was a genius. Now ya' know how we Liverpool fans felt when Fergie was running United....that said, if I had to give a short list of great managers, he's on that list.
2 of my short list managers are both United managers: Fergie (say whatever you want about him, he knew how to manage a club) and Matt Busby (who was a star player for Liverpool prior to becoming a manager). In fact, there's a great anecdote about Liverpool great Bill Shankly that involves Busby. He's near the top of any list, as much as I hate United...he was a genius.
To wit....my short list of managers
Shankly was a fantastic manager, and Busby...wow! The Busby Babes, who could ever forget them? I do feel a slight bit of remorse that it was my Bolton Wanderers and the absolute legend that was Nat Lofthouse that beat them in the FA Cup after the Munich disaster, but they had an absolutely astonishing run during his tenure!2 of my short list managers are both United managers: Fergie (say whatever you want about him, he knew how to manage a club) and Matt Busby (who was a star player for Liverpool prior to becoming a manager). TL/DR: Back in 1959, Shankly was managing Huddersfield Town when Liverpool fired their then-boss Phil Thompson; when the owners of Liverpool headed over to talk to Shankly about becoming the Reds' boss, Shankly - not knowing they were with Liverpool - asked, "What, is Matt Busby packing it in at United?"
It was those two managers - Bill Shankly at Liverpool and Matt Busby at United - who cemented what is now IMO the Rivalry of Rivalries, Liverpool-Manchester City.
Haha I am surprised to get the shoutout considering how poorly we have been performing lately. The feedback from fans on them here in New Zealand has been savage. Not that I agree with the extent of it at all.I have a framed picture of a Bolton Evening News cover image from when Bolton beat United, during the Fergie Era. Such a wonderful game!

Football -- Bolton Wanderers, England
NHL -- Dallas Stars
Ruby Union -- England (with loads of respect for New Zealand and Wales)
I'm also a casual cricket and Aussie Rules fan, but I don't have favourites in those.
You can never discredit the amazing history of the All Blacks! Some of the greatest ever players, some of the most entertaining and most dominant matches, and who doesn't love a good Haka?Haha I am surprised to get the shoutout considering how poorly we have been performing lately. Rugby League: (NRL)The Warriors but I also support the Eels, (International) Kiwis but I also like Tonga, (State of Origin) NSW Blues
Rugby Union: (Super Rugby) Auckland Blues and (Provincial Rugby) Auckland
Haha I am boring with the amount of teams I support. But with NRL alone I watch 4 or so games a week.

So true on all four accounts! There are certain constants in sports....such as never betting against
(1) the US. women in soccer
(2) Canada w/regards to hockey
(3) the Dutch in long-track speedskating.....
(4) New Zealand w/regards to rugby.
I am not so sure. I think the international scene is a lot more competitive now. Which I think is a lot better for the game overall. We still have some amazing players but the rest of the rugby world has caught up now. Ireland just had their historic series win over us 2 -1/You can never discredit the amazing history of the All Blacks! Not so much of late. I think NZ are 2 wins from their last 7 matches. There are certain constants in sports....such as never betting against

As of late, this is true; historically speaking, though, they've long been the best in world. Offhand, the worst record they have agst. anyone are with the Springboks' from South Africa and even there the Kiwis' have a near-60% winning percentage agst. them. Not so much of late.
