How do you feel about forum rules and guidelines? Are they too strict, too lenient, or just right?
What changes would you suggest, if any?

It depends on the contents of the rules that the administrator implements. Generally, following the forum software TOS and don't be an idiot will do wonders for sticking to the rules.

Forum rules on which forum specifically? If you're talking about this forum I think they are just right. :D

I haven't got any on my forum but it's just a matter of using common sense which all my members have currently.

No rules?
No rules yet. I would hope that those who visit my forum are adults (Or teenagers who know right from wrong on a forum) and can act their age. I'm not too fussed on freedom of speech so long as it's not going too far.

I put them as the situations arrive. Too many rules scares away users and I avoid them as much as possible.

That can be a good and bad thing. Members don't want to think you just make things up as you go along, but they also want to be reassured that you're taking care of issues.

Now a days a lot of forum owners can't afford to be very strict. Not without running their members off. The correct thing to do is to pick and choose your battles. Try to go easy on people and remember that members are what make a community.

I think some basic rules are fine, they shouldn't be too strict so as not to end up scaring users.
